The State of EVs in Sri Lanka (2025)
Sri Lanka's electric vehicle market has grown significantly since the import duty reductions in 2022. The Nissan Leaf dominates the used EV market, while new arrivals from BYD and MG are gaining popularity in the new car segment.
Most Popular EVs in Sri Lanka
- Nissan Leaf (24kWh / 40kWh) — Most widely available used EV. The 40kWh version gives around 270km real-world range.
- MG ZS EV — One of the more affordable new EVs, with a growing dealer network.
- BYD Atto 3 — Good range and features; gaining traction among new buyers.
Charging Infrastructure
Colombo and major cities now have a reasonable number of charging stations, but rural areas remain underserved. Most EV owners charge at home overnight using a standard 13A socket (slow) or a dedicated wall charger (fast). For long-distance travel outside the Western Province, plan your route carefully.
Running Costs
An EV costs approximately Rs 1–1.50 per km to run on electricity (home charging), compared to Rs 15–20 per km for a petrol car. For a driver covering 2,000 km/month, this represents a saving of over Rs 25,000 per month.
Should You Buy an EV in 2025?
Buy an EV if: You drive primarily within the city, can charge at home, and cover more than 1,500 km per month.
Wait if: You frequently travel long distances outside the Western Province, or you need a vehicle for heavy off-road use.
